National Girl Child Day is celebrated every year on the 24th of January as a national observance day for the girl child. We started this celebration to provide girls in this country with more support and opportunities.
People are encouraged to become more aware of the social inequalities girls face during this day Inequality in girl children is a vast problem that includes many areas of inequality in education, nutrition, legal rights, medical care, protection, honor, child marriage and so many.
National girl child day has been started as a national girl’s development mission by the Government of India. This mission raises awareness among people all over the country about the importance of girls’ promotion.
It enhances the meaningful contribution of the girls in decision-making processes through the active support of the parents and other community members.

National girl child day 2024 will be celebrated on 24th of January, on Wednesday.
WHY IS NATIONAL GIRL CHILD DAY CELEBRATED?
The day is celebrated to give girls a better position in society and to improve their quality of life. It is very necessary to remove different types of social discrimination and exploitation that girls generally face in their life.
To increase awareness about the necessity of girls’ rights in society, various political and community leaders spoke to the public about girls’ rights for equal education and fundamental freedoms.
It is very necessary for the girls to get a full potential, safe, and enabling environment. They should be aware of all their legal rights, the facts of life good education, nutrition, and healthcare rights.
They should be well aware of legislation including the Domestic Violence Act 2009, Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006, and Dowry Prohibition Act 2006 in order to get their proper rights and face all the challenges in life.
In our country, the female literacy rate is still 53.87% and one-third of the young girls are malnourished. Reproductive age group women are anemic and suffering from various other diseases just because of gender discrimination in society and limited access to health services.
Through a range of schemes, the Ministry of Women and Child Development has taken steps to improve the status of girl children at the national and state levels.
The Women and Child Development Ministry had implemented a scheme called “Dhanalaksmi” to make a cash transfer to the girl child family to fulfill basic needs such as immunization, birth registration, school enrollment, and maintenance up to the Class VIII. The Right to Education Act has made available free and necessary education to the girl child.
HOW NATIONAL GIRL CHILD DAY IS CELEBRATED
The government of India organizes a big campaign to increase people’s consciousness towards girl children in Indian society.
The Women and Child Development Ministry began celebrating National Girl Child Day in 2008 as a national holiday Through this campaign, the Indian Government has highlighted the inequalities towards girls in Indian society.
To this day, the government runs various advertisements on television, local newspapers, and radio stations, all with the message, “Save the Girl Child”.. NGO organizations and nongovernment organizations also come together and take part in the celebration to fight against the social stigma about girl children.
OBJECTIVES OF CELEBRATING NATIONAL GIRL CHILD DAY
As a national observance, it aims to raise people’s consciousness and offer new opportunities for girls.
- To remove all the inequalities faced by the girl children of Indian society.
- To make certain that every girl child is getting proper respect and value in Indian society.
- To ensure that the girl children are getting all the human rights in the country.
- To work against diminishing the child sex ratio in India and change people’s minds about the girl child.
- To initiate a couple towards the girl child by increasing awareness about the importance and role of the girl child.
- To address the girl children’s issues associated with their health, respect, education, nutrition and etc.
- To propagate gender equality among people in India.
GIRL CHILD RIGHTS IN INDIA
The government of India has taken various steps by declaring a variety of schemes to make the girl child status better. Some of them are:
- The government has prohibited clinics from making sex determinations during pregnancy.
- Girls have been prohibited from getting married as children
- All pregnant women must receive antenatal care in order to combat malnutrition, high illiteracy, poverty, and infant mortality
- The “Save the Girl Child” scheme has been introduced by the government to save the girl child.
- Free and compulsory primary school education for both boys and girls until the age of 14 has improved the education status of girls in India.
- To improve the status of the girl child in India, the government of India has reserved 1/3 of seats in the local government for women.
- To improve women’s status and employment opportunities, the legislature has also introduced anti-MTP laws, anti-sati laws, and antidowry laws.
- As part of the Five Year Plan, the government is paying attention to the education status of backward states.
- Uniforms, noon meals, educational materials, and repayments to the families of SC and ST caste girls are provided to schoolchildren.
- Balwadi-cum-screeches have been implemented for caring for the girl babies and attending primary school.
- The Open Learning System has been established for easiness to the girls of backward areas.
- SHGs, or Self-Help Groups, are the government’s main policy to improve the livelihood of rural girls.
