Using a microscope, he presented many microscope slides to explain the etiology of tuberculosis, a virulent human infectious disease. According to his announcement in Berlin, it spread rapidly throughout Europe and the Americas, killing one out of seven people.
His discovery of tuberculosis opened a big door in front the people to get diagnosed and cured of tuberculosis.
HISTORY OF World Tuberculosis Day
“The International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (IUATLD)” had planned to establish World TB Day on 24th March in honor of Dr. Robert Koch’s 100th anniversary of his Tuberculosis presentation.
A joint effort of the IUATLD and WHO established this event under the theme “Defeat TB: Now and Forever”. However, the UN and the WHO did not declare it an official celebration.
By 1995, the WHO and the Royal Dutch Tuberculosis Foundation decided to celebrate it annually in Den Haag, the Netherlands. Organizations such as WHO, the IUATLD, and KNCV are planning a variety of events and activities to celebrate World Tuberculosis Day next year in 1996.
DOTS was declared the biggest step taken against tuberculosis by the WHO at a news conference in Berlin in 1997. A new network “Stop TB Partnership” has been launched by various organizations to fight against TB by highlighting the scope of prevention and cure of this disease to the common public. ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross) is helping people to fight against TB in prisons because of overcrowding and poor nutrition.
